At a time when European unity is being tested from both outside and within, and when signs of a deepening East-West split appear stronger than at any point since the 2004 enlargement, the 30-year anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall provides a welcome opportunity to revisit the journey that brought us together in a Union spanning the entire European continent and discuss some of the challenges that face the EU and that no European country can face alone.
Bringing together speakers who lived through Europe’s great transition with representatives of those who will have to shape its future, we ask: when did it become apparent that the Cold War was ending and that the dream of a united Europe was finally within reach? What were the obstacles and opportunities on the road to the great enlargement of 2004? How has been our life together in the EU over the last 15 years? And how do we make sure that the achievements of a united Europe do not become another footnote in the often troubled history of our continent?
